Personas
Sam Watson
Sam is a 54 year old male with some college experience. He left school to support his family. Sam is the sole owner of a small manufacturing business. He has 12 employees. He built his company by being good at what he does. “If it can’t be done right, we won’t do it.”
Scenario
He is looking for a straw widget that he can use for a part in a project he is building. He wants to know if our widgets are as versatile and well-built as what he could make himself.
He could make the widgets himself, however, if he can get enough quality control and the lower prices of the mass production, he can save time by purchasing them. He has several other machinery manufacturers he could choose from.
He will be using his desktop at work (T1), his laptop at home (cable) and his smart phone (4G) to access the website. He wants answers to the following questions:
- Do you use quality materials?
- Can you make a custom widget?
Technical
Sam uses computers and computerized machinery regularly. He has a CAD operator on site, and can read CAD diagrams. He primarily accesses the Internet with his laptop. He has to spend 2-3 hours per day doing business on the web. He would rather be in his shop.
Motivation
Sam is motivated by quality. He takes pride in his business and needs our widgets to maintain the same quality. He also needs us to be responsive to his time restraints and budget.
Susan Williams
Susan is a 34 year old female with a MBA. Susan is the head of the department for a large company. She has been working for her current company for 5 years and is known for keeping costs down. She is always saying, “Finish it a day early for a dollar less.”
Scenario
She needs straw widgets that can be produced for a good price. She also needs the quantity shipments to arrive reliably. She doesn’t understand the engineering of the widgets, just the end product.
She comes to our site on the recommendation of one of her engineers.
She uses her laptop (Ethernet, cable), notebook, and smart phone to access our site for ordering, confirming shipping, and reading her invoices. She wants answers to the following questions:
- What are the price breaks for quantity orders?
- How do I contact the customer support department?
Technical
Susan is well versed in business software. She is never far from her computer or notepad or smartphone. She is used to finding what she wants quickly. She will use her smartphone or notepad for most of the follow-ups with our site.
Motivation
Susan is motivated by the bottom line. She wants the job done quickly and for a good price. She needs the supply chain to run smoothly so it doesn’t hold up her operations.
Sergio Walenka
Sergio is a 26 year old male with a BS in Engineering. Sergio is an international customer. He is looking for a part that will help him with his model building hobby. He knows what it should do, but he doesn’t have the equipment to make one. He has been known to say, “Robots rule!”
Scenario
He hopes our company will already have a straw widget in stock that does what he needs.
He will be using a desktop at home. He might also use his desktop at work during his breaks. He wants answers to the following questions:
- Do you ship internationally?
- Can I purchase just one widget at retail?
Technical
Sergio uses his computer sometimes at work. At home, he prefers working in his basement. He uses his computer to find what he needs for his hobby, but the computer is not his hobby.
Motivation
Sergio is just looking for someone who has distributors inside his country. He doesn’t want the shipment to get stuck in customs. He is willing to wait a bit for a better price on shipping, but not too long. He wants to buy a widget that is already in stock. He wants a no-fuss purchase.
