Lesson 11 Practice Journal

This is an education project for a fictional producer of straw widgets.

Finishing the Site

Coding the Site Plan

I have a large site plan and I had not coded it before this week. It turned out to be more time-consuming than I expected. I had so many different things that needed special attention. A friend ran it through dreamweaver to help me out. But I ended up redoing almost all of the code. The layout wasn't right. I also needed to rewrite the site plan so it matched my site. I changed the colorscheme and the fonts. I rearranged the assets list to reflect the name of the pages. It also has bullet points for many of the major page sections. I didn't adjust the templates, but I have noted that on the site plan.

Time Spent

This week I spent 9.5 hours in deliberate practice and 5.5 hours reading. I read some more of the course readings as well as researched some things on the W3Schools website and other websites. I showed my site to a fellow student and got some ideas for media queries. I spent a lot of time coding, checking my website on various devices, and then re-adjusting the code.

Media Queries

I got a lot of confusing advice on the media queries. I used the code that I found in the course. But it seemed incomplete. Then I went to a link from the course to a site that had me do my code in another way. Then a fellow student showed me what he learned on stack overflow. In the end, it seems to be lacking the responsiveness I was trying to create. It does do some things though.

Frustrations.

This was a frustrating week. I guess I should have e-mailed for help. I did attend office hours, but Roy was helping another student. I was grateful for the help of a fellow student, but I still couldn't fix my contact form. I realize that my site is not as good as I had planned it to be. It seems that I overextended myself this semester. Time management has been a challenge ever since I got off to a rocky start. I think that is a lesson in itself.

Successes

I was able to get all As on Y-Slow for each of my pages. I was also able to finally get the pdf files of my templates to upload to my site. My CSS validated on the W3C Validator. I was able to get my fonts to look the way I want. I finished coding the site plan! I learned more about everything. I am including a screenshot of my validated code.
